MCPC – Service for the Lord’s Day
Standard Bulletin for Ordinary Time following Epiphany

Ordinary (ordinal or counted) Time is an “in-between” season. Just as the holy days are the mountaintops, Ordinary Time is the slopes, valleys, and flatlands. All are beautiful — and necessary.

Welcome and Lighting the Christ Candle
We invite you to a time of silent meditation and companionship with God.

Call to Worship (responsive)
In your wisdom, O God, you call us here to worship you.
We gather, alive to the Word of God.
You call us to be fully alive with your life abundant, ready to listen and respond
with heart, soul, strength, and mind.
We listen, alive to the Word of God.
You call us to be always watchful for your Word of wisdom, sometimes startling
and unexpected, sometimes still and quiet, but always dwelling among us.
We watch and wait for the Word of God. Come let us worship God.

Invitation to a Time of Confession
When we come into the holy presence of God, our own humanity is laid bare. When we stand in the living presence of truth, our own falsehood is revealed. People of God, let us acknowledge who we are and ask our ever-present God to forgive us.

Prayer of Personal and Communal Confession (unison)             Based on Daniel 9:4-19
O Lord, great God, all holy, most gracious, filled with mercy and steadfast love,
we are anxious when we come before you,
for we have preferred the ways of this world to your ways,
for we have rebelled against your wisdom and we have gotten into trouble,
for we have rejected your guidance and have gotten lost altogether.

To you belongs righteousness, O Lord, and to us confusion of face.
O Lord, great God, all holy, most gracious, filled with mercy and steadfast love,
incline your ear to our troubles. Hear us when we pour out our sorrows before you.
Forgive us, not on the ground of our own righteousness,
but on the ground of your great mercy.

On the ground of your great mercy in the gift of your Son, Jesus Christ.
It is in his name that we pray, for he is our Savior
and the mediator of the covenant of grace. Amen.
…silence follows…

Assurance of Forgiveness                                        Jeremiah 33:8
The Lord has said, “I will cleanse them from all the guilt of their sin against me, and I will forgive
all the guilt of their sin and rebellion against me.” Friends, believe the good news of the Gospel,
In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven!

Hymn of Praise (please rise)

Prayer for Illumination (unison)                      Joanna Harader, Spacious Faith
As we come to the word of God we pray,
“Holy One, dwell within us. Whisper in our ears; Glimmer in our vision;
Write upon our hearts. We wait with open ears, open eyes, open hearts. Amen.”

Scripture Lessons                  This is the Word of the Lord.   Thanks be to God.

Affirmation of Faith (unison) Confession of Belhar
We believe in the triune God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit,
who gathers, protects and cares for the church through Word and Spirit.
This, God has done since the beginning of the world and will do to the end.

We believe in one holy, universal Christian church,
the communion of saints called from the entire human family.

We believe that Christ’s work of reconciliation is made manifest in the church as the community of believers who have been reconciled with God and with one another.

Hymn of Response (please rise)

Sharing our Joys & Concerns

The Prayers of the People & The Lord’s Prayer
Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil, for thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.

Our Offerings to God (unison prayer)            Gill LeFevre on re-worship.blogspot
Almighty God, who made us who we are, we offer all of ourselves to You.
Take our talents, our energy and our joy, and use us to share Your love.
Take our mistakes, our regrets and our pain, and use us to bring Your healing.
Magnify the gifts we offer before You today, to spread Your peace in the world. Amen.

Hymn of Sending (please rise)

God is good-All the Time      All the Time- God is Good
